New Projection Equipment

Thanks to Regal Entertainment the Alabama Theatre now has up to date projection equipment to replace the 60 year-old projectors that were installed in 1953. When you see the new Phantom of the Opera at the theatre you will notice not only a new, brighter and sharper picture but sound that you would expect to hear in one of the smaller mini cinemas. THANKS TO REGAL ENTERTAINMENT GROUP!

New Ballroom

The Alabama Theatre staff, with architect Alan Tischansky who works with Emory Kirkwood and Associates, is working on the plans for a new elevator, street level entrance and lobby and 5,000 square foot ballroom and kitchen that you will be able to enter and exit to and from the theatre or the street. This ballroom, elevator and lobby entrance will cost about $400,000, but when completed will make the Alabama Theatre more appealing and far more versatile for a larger variety of functions than it is at this time.

We are working with other theatres that have similar rooms to find out how this ballroom should be built and how it should be operated when complete. The interior of the ballroom will be patterned after the decor of the Alabama Theatre so you will feel like you are in a room that was designed at the same time as the theatre in 1927.

Contributions

Ballroom - Elevator - Street Level Lobby The Alabama Theatre operates in the black, which means the operation of the theatre pays for the day to day operations. What it doesn't pay for is capital improvements or large projects so the funding for new projects and capital improvements has to come from outside the theatre; foundations, corporations and individuals. Our new ballroom space will cost about $400,000, of which $200,000 has been raised, with $200,000 to go before we can start the project.

As you know, if you attend the Alabama Theatre, we do not have an elevator and we have five levels of seating. A real fact of life is that people are not only getting older they are remaining active longer. While the people are not handicapped, they have a hard time maneuvering the many steps it takes to get to the good sets in the balcony, so the project was to get someway to install an elevator to assist these people.

As the plans for the project were being made, our architect told us that the elevator could stop at the old rehearsal hall so we started thinking about what the unused space could do for the theatre. Now the $200,000 project was expanding to include the new ballroom and was increased to $400,000. The project is now easier to sell because the ballroom will generate a projected $100,000 annually.

Your help is needed to get us to our goal of $400,000.
