Special Holiday Edition 2009

NEW LOFT ROOM

We are still working on the new Loft Meeting/Party Room on the 3rd level of The Hill Event Center. Work is going slow because money is coming in slow and our new Grand Opening date is the Holiday Open House December 13. This will be the very first time the public will be able to view the finished product, complete with decorated Christmas tree and music. Make your plans to attend the open house Sunday December 13 at 2pm.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

Our second annual Holiday Open House will be just before the opening of our Holiday Film Series Sunday afternoon, December 13 at 2pm. We will have our entire theatre complex and the entire Hill Event Center Complex open and decorated so don’t miss this event.

DONATIONS

It is important this year, more than ever, to dig down deep into your pockets and see if you can pass along a little to the Alabama Theatre. As with everyone, this year is the worst year in our 22-year history, with attendance down, shows down and most of all donations way down. Without a heavy influx of donations we will probably end 2009 in a loss position for the first time in 15 years. We will take anything; cash, checks, donation of things that we can turn into cash such furniture, cars, boats, etc. Things we will not accept: family pets, unruly children, mothers-in-law or drunk husbands. But remember, we are desperate and the Alabama Theatre is a 501©3 non-profit organization. Call the office to ask any questions about donations, they will be greatly appreciated. The Alabama Theatre has its 82nd birthday on December 26th.

HOLIDAY FILM SERIES

Pick your movie, pick your date, pack your entire family into the SUV and head to the Alabama Theatre for the very best feel-good holiday events of the season. Here they are, the best holiday films ever made, along with a classic cartoon, the Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ and very famous sing-a-long in the beautifully decorated Alabama Theatre. You can pick your tickets up early beginning December 7th and avoid the long lines at the box office. Free, secured parking, all for the Alabama Theatre depression busting low price of $7.00 for adults and $6.00 for sr. citizens and children under 12.

ANOTHER AWARD

Our General Manager, Cecil Whitmire, has received yet another award, this time from the American Journalism Historians Association. This award is their annual Outstanding Local Media History Award and was presented to Cecil at their annual meeting on October 8. 2009. Congratulations again, Cecil.

LYRIC THEATRE UPDATE

The lonely, lovely Lyric Theatre, sitting empty for 50 years at the corner of 3rd Avenue North and 18th Street was a flurry of activity during the recent Sidewalk Film Festival, the Lyric was visited by over 400 film makers and visitors during the 3 day festival. The theatre was staffed by Dan Liles a local theatre historian and the staff of Birmingham Weekly Magazine. Thanks to Jesse Chambers and Glenny Brock many donations were received as well as volunteers to work on the Lyric Project.

REMEMBER

Visit the Alabama often, donate to the Alabama Theatre often, pledge to assist the Lyric Fine Arts Theatre project, have a Happy Holiday season and pray for our country.
